I Suck At Social Media

I suck at social media. Facebook, Twitter, blogging… I’m pretty much useless at all of it. I’ve tried to sit down and analyze why, and I think it comes down to two main reasons.

1. It feels like too much work.
This applies in particular to writing blog entries, but it’s also true for microblogging like Facebook and Twitter. If I’m doing something interesting, I don’t feel the need to stop doing it in order to tell people about it. All that does is take me away from the thing that’s interesting me. And for longer blog entries, it’s even more the case. It seems like there’s always something else I should be doing (e.g., writing) or something else I’d rather be doing (e.g., playing video games). Sitting down and typing up a post feels like having to write a college essay.

2. I have self-esteem issues.
The first reason follows directly from this one. I believe that blogging, tweeting, etc, wouldn’t feel so much like work if I believed that other people were actually interested. But I don’t. And so every time I start to make a status update or send out a tweet, I invariably stop myself by saying “does anybody really care what I have to say?” Writing blog entries is reduced in my mind to keeping a diary — writing about things that no one reads and wouldn’t care about if they did.

Now, the problem, of course, is that this becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy. If I never update, naturally no one’s going to read. And if no one’s reading, I feel no impetus to update. So, clearly, the solution is for me to suck it up and do the work. And this is the plan. I’m going to try and update twice a week. Tuesdays, I’ll do a post like this one, talking briefly about some random topic that interests me. Thursdays, I will post up a photo, drawing, or other image file that I’ve recently seen, and talk about why I like it. And we’ll go from there and see how that works.

Upcoming Projects

So, I’ve had this blog for a while and haven’t gotten around to making an entry in it yet, so now is as good a time as any. What I thought I’d start with is a list of projects I’ve got in the works right now, in case anyone’s interested in what they can expect from me in the coming months. So here we go:

Lifeblood: Christian Denuvue is a vampire: a member of a despicable underclass who steal nanite-infused blood from the rich and sell it on the black market. The nanites extend life, heal injuries, and cure disease… if you can afford them. When a routine snatch-and-grab goes wrong, Christian finds himself infected with the nanites. Now he’s the hunted, on the run from other vampires eager to drain his blood for profit.
Expected Length: Novel

Me, Myself, and I: Skippy McNameless (my standard placeholder for an unnamed-as-yet character) had a strange visitor today: himself. Now he’s been pulled through a dimensional tear, helping an alternate version of himself rescue a third copy from being executed for a crime none of them committed.
Expected Length: Novella

And Baby Makes Four: The Triune are comprised of three genders: male, female, and the intersexed Breeders. Fertilization cannot occur between a male and female without the help of a Breeder, but only the females can carry the embryos to term. Human Skippy McNameless accidentally impregnates his Breeder lover, and now they are in a race against time to find a willing female to share in the birth before the embryo grows too large and kills the Breeder.
Expected Length: Short Story (for the Storm Moon Press anthology Flux)

In addition to that, there are a number of other ideas that I’m kicking around that haven’t fully formed yet which may be for other anthologies, or may turn out to be longer works. Suffice it to say, I’ve got no shortage in that department, so you’ll probably be seeing my name around for quite some time to come.

New Professional Blog — I’m Here

My pen name is Erik Moore, and I write GLBT and polyamorous erotic romance. Yes, I’m a man, and I write romance. Not just romance, but right now, it is my current focus. I’m published with Storm Moon Press. I have the polyamorous, bisexual short story The Direction of Greatest Courage (which first appeared in the Storm Moon Press anthology Cast the Cards), and I recently had my lesbian werewolf short story, To Pierce the Sky, in Storm Moon Press’ Daughters of Artemis anthology.

I have several projects in the works. A gay sci-fi novel with a new twist on vampires, as well as several other short stories I want to submit to Storm Moon Press’ anthologies. I’m also working with S.L. Armstrong on a co-authored sci-fi erotic romance novel.

This blog will probably not be updated as much as I’d like, but I do have a day job (necessary evil, sadly) that sucks away a lot of my time. I do have several posts planned, though, so stick around to see what little bits of witty commentary manage to worm their way out of my brain and onto the screen.
